It was an easy shot.
While field-dressing this gray, another
squirrel ran along the same downed tree
where I'd missed one and killed my
second one only 15 minutes earlier. I
quickly downed it.
As the minutes ticked by, I watched
several squirrels race through the treetops
and others scamper on the ground, all out
of range of the .410.
I heard even more squirrels that I
couldn't see - they seemed to be everywhere this day.
The thought of taking a limit crept into
my mind, and even though I don't attach
much importance to it, it's nice to shoot
six squirrels now and then.
I've only bagged a limit of squirrels
two or three times in all my years of
hunting.
The pitter-patter of acorn pieces hitting
the ground got my attention, and high in
an oak I saw the squirrel just as it moved
around from the back side of the tree.
It was too long of a shot with the .410,
but patience prevailed, and when the
squirrel came down the trunk and stopped
at the tree's base, well within range, I shot
and it dropped.
At that point I'd been hunting only two
hours and had five squirrels - four in the
40
past hour.
Then the pace slowed.
I thought about changing strategy for
the afternoon, or even heading to another
spot, and the thought of limiting out was
melting quicker than the frost that had
been on the grassy spots on the walk in.
Then a bushytail jumped on the
downed oak where I had taken two earlier
and missed one.
This one was moving steadily toward
me, and when it got to within 15 yards, I
placed the shotgun bead slightly ahead of
it and pulled the trigger.
At the shot, my sixth and last squirrel
fell to the ground.
I picked it up and glanced at my watch.
In just three hours I'd seen around
15 squirrels.
After field-dressing the squirrel
and putting it in the back of my coat,
I took a few moments to savor the
beautiful October day.
I then shucked the two
shells from the magazine of
the Winchester and trudged
through the woods
toward my SUV. It had
been an enjoyable
morning with my
vintage .410.
