As the hunt got underway, there was fresh sign - like
bare ground where hares had dug to nibble on hemlock
roots, far left, but beagle Tippi had a hard time starting
one on a chase for Ed Reed, son Rob and the author.
pursuit of a fleeing hare, and Rob got off
a shot, but missed.
The baying song of the beagle echoed
through the swamp and, by the sound
of things, the hare was taking Tippi far
downstream.
Rob elected to go to the creek, which
served as a natural boundary, while Ed
and I followed the upper edge of the
rhododendron in case they looped back
to where they began.
My heart pounding and mind racing
over the potential of getting a crack at my
first ever snowshoe, I turned to Ed and
inquired, "What should I do?"
The wise old hare-hunting veteran
turned to me and offered the most sage
advice he could muster in a time of hot
pursuit.
"Just get yourself to where you think
you can shoot a rabbit," he said with a
smile.
"So this is snowshoeing," I said to
myself as senses kicked into hyper-drive.
At first, I waited, listened and calculated
the direction of Tippi's route. East. Her

bawling was coming closer now, but too
far into the brush to get a shot.
I reactively hustled ahead to try and cut
them off, but when Tippi emerged from
the understory, no hare was in sight.
She continued off into a large swath of
scrub oak, still hammering away. Her loop
now headed south, and again I tried to
follow the chase, where I caught a glimpse
of Tippi, but saw no hare.
Now she ventured toward the creek.
I could hear her making large figureeights below me, Rob was much farther
downstream and Ed was so far north, he
could barely hear her, so thinking like a
bird-hunter that goes to the dog, I again
closed in on her position.
When I got to Tippi, she was sniffing
incessantly around a small clearing. She
passed within feet of me, ran to a patch
of brush, threw her nose into the air and
let out a yelp.
She gave me a look as if to say, "Trust
me, dummy," and with that she was off
again. It was at this very moment that I
finally realized beagles work differently
