The November morning dawned crisp
as a group of youth hunters prepared to do
something no one had done in decades:
hunt wild pheasants in Pennsylvania.
Anticipation ran high. Proud parents
looked on as assigned mentors spoke with
the hunters, then readied gear.
Hunting dogs whined in their kennels
eager to breathe-in the heavy scent of a
cockbird.
Each two-youth team lined up on either
side of its mentor and dog handler. As the
dogs were released and the young hunters stepped into cover, they walked into
history, as well.

PENNSYLVANIA PHEASANTS
Looking back through that same history book, it's not hard to see the highs and
lows that mark the ring-necked pheasant's
time in the Commonwealth.
Introduced in Pennsylvania in 1892
and first stocked by the Game Commission in appreciable numbers in 1915,
pheasants found accommodating habitat that had been largely deforested or
replaced by agriculture.

increased gradually through the first half
of the 20th century.
Their growing populations were augmented through a propagation program
that began with Game Commission refuge
keepers and later evolved into agency
pheasant farms and a day-old pheasant
chick program that gave young birds to
sportsmen's club to raise and release.
Through the 1960s, pheasants thrived
almost everywhere suitable habitat
existed. Going into the 1970 season, it
was estimated the state held over 2.5
million birds.
Then, a combination of factors, including harsh winters, the end of several key
agricultural set-aside programs, and the
advent of "clean farming" practices,
caused pheasant habitat - and the birds -
to disappear across the landscape.
By the mid-1980s, pheasant numbers
were one-fifth of what they had been only
15 years earlier, This trend continued for
at least another 10 years.
The Game Commission worked to
offset wild pheasant losses by increasing stockings. Agency propagators also
continued to increase their efficiency
