activity. And there, in stark contrast to
the drab brown leaves, were a few yellow
kernels on the ground.
"I've got some corn here," I radioed.
With my head down, I began scrutinizing every leaf, log, branch and shrub
for more corn.
In fact, I was so focused, I didn't
notice the deer piled up on the ground
directly in front of me until I was a few
feet from it.
Its front half was obscured by mountain laurel, but when I stepped up to it, I
saw it was an untagged 7-point buck that
appeared to have been shot that morning.
I radioed Coughenour to let him
know, then followed the blood trail back
toward the stand.
As I followed the trail, I saw more
corn on the ground, some of it spattered
with blood. The first drops of blood were
just 35 yards from the stand.
The buck on the ground begged the
question of why the hunter still was
hunting when we found him. We were in
Wildlife Management Unit 2C, which is
open only to the hunting of antlered deer
through the season's first five days. And
we were on the game lands, which meant
he couldn't have been hunting antlerless
deer lawfully with a DMAP permit.
The hunter said he'd shot at a buck
early that morning, but didn't think he
hit it.
We didn't buy his story.
PAYING THE PRICE
As Coughenour continued to question
the hunter, Svinda and I dragged the
buck over to him.
He took a quick look at the antlers,
and with a disgusted tone in his voice,
said he thought the deer's rack was
bigger.
His comment seemed to shed some

light on why his rifle was still loaded
when we found him: he was hoping to
connect with a bigger buck.
I showed the hunter where I'd found
the first drops of blood, and where the
buck was lying. It was obvious he knew
that he killed the buck, and faced with
the evidence, he admitted it.
The hunter said he'd seen decent
bucks on his trail camera before the
season, so he scattered corn around his
stand to bring the deer within easy shooting distance.
He said he figured he had less of a
chance of being caught if he spread the
corn out rather than using a feeder, like
he had the previous year. He also said
he thought hunting farther away from
where Coughenour and I had found the
stand and feeder, and deeper into the
game lands, would enable him to go
undetected.
Instead, he faced substantial penalties. Pleading guilty to hunting through
the use of bait, illegal taking of a buck
through bait, baiting on state game lands,
and having a loaded firearm after killing
a limit of big game, the hunter's fines and
court costs totaled $1,754. And he won't
be able to legally hunt in Pennsylvania
again until July 2020.
