of a fissure at my back, the only point
from which to take a shot in the dense
thicket. I hoped the recoil would not
push me backward too hard, but Tony
was spotting me.
Dozens of bulky black forms streamed
by like freight cars, all cows and calfs,
then there was nothing. I got down off
the sticks and continued glassing with
Tony.
"Oh well then," said Tony."Call it a
day, I suppose."
"Wait," I said, "I've got something.
Higher up to the right, Nine o'clock,
next to that tall rock pillar."
" Yes," said Tony, "good eye, and
it's a bull."
All I had seen was the polished curve
of one horn. When the bull moved I was
back on the sticks with the big gun.
I shouldered the .22, a Remington
511 Scoremaster bolt-action with a
Weaver B4 scope in an N3 side mount.
Throughout the summer I honed my
marksmanship by practicing on handdrawn squirrel targets.
I enjoyed drawing the squirrels as
much as I did shooting them. The big
gray had come down the back of
the oak and hopped up on
a stump, surprising me.
It was a long shot and I
leveled the rifle and
held the crosshairs on its shoulder.
In the moments
it takes to get off a
shot, the accomplished rifleman
should have absolute clarity, relying
on confidence born
of practice and a
MARCH 2018
complete familiarity with his rifle; and
if a live target, a steady observation of
its actions.
Instead, images of the past year
flashed by quicker than the strike of the
firing pin on the cartridge.
I could see myself in the thickets
of summer, picking blackberries at a
quarter per quart to earn the $55 for
the rifle. I recalled poring over the
pages of gun and hunting articles, and
outdoor catalogs; the hours spent studying illustrated wildlife charts and field
guides, and watching birds to sharpen
observational skills; and dozens of perforated targets tacked to the splintered
door that served as the backstop of our
rifle range.
The rimfire cracked and the gray
dropped. Walking over to pick up the
squirrel other images emerged; of
sublime possibilities; a buck lying in
the leaves, or a bear or elk, of African
gamefields and the whickering of zebra
and guttural moans of lions at
sunset.
Now that would
be Big Time.
