start Lou and the rest of the offense in
perfect synchronization, often by summoning his most trusted snap count,
"Set Go!"
Spring 2017 found the best friends
again achieving such intangible harmony, although Friday night lights were
replaced by the stillness of Tuesday morning twilight, at an hour when Hounds fans
still slumbered with thoughts of next
year's team.
Collin scouted a pair of nice long
beards the first Monday of the season,
tucking them gently into their roost.
On Tuesday, with the Campbell dairy
farm their locker room, the pregame
huddle assembled around 4 a.m. Gone
were October's catchy cheerleading
chants, subbed out for melodic May
birdsong. Grass-stained uniforms were
swapped for camouflage.
Lou's morning chores would have
to wait. This same pair who turkey
hunted the morning of their senior prom
wouldn't be kept from the field.

And just as they'd done thousands
of times in running plays together, the
teammates took their positions next to
one another, at the corner of an old bean
field, where they strategically placed two
hen decoys.
At their backs, massive oaks with a
line of multiflora rose for concealment.
But on this breezy morning, Nos. 7
and 72 were a distant memory. The only
digits marking the day were the matching
12s engraved on their guns, a shotgun
formation of a different kind.
Seconds prior to light, a gobbler beat
the Campbell farm rooster in declaring
a new day.
On cue, a hen flew from her roost into
the field at a distance of 50 yards.
The hunters, flipping through their
mental playbook, made a few calls.
Impressively, Collin has honed his
natural turkey calling, using only his
mouth to verbalize the plays. And with
Lou on his diaphragm call, through the
persistent mosquito buzz, the duo let out
their soft, but effective tree yelps.
Half the distance of a football field
away, Lou spotted an interested gobbler.
It was as if the bird had read the playbook, pitching to the field only 30 yards
from the decoys.
Excitedly, the tom fanned his majestic
feathers and quickly achieved full strut.
Thirty seconds later, another gobbler
landed among the spread, closer than
the first.
Immediately, it headed nervously for
the sidelines, before seeming to pick up
on the other bird's calming confidence.
But in a moment the two toms, still
exposed at 40 yards, sensed something
was amiss.
Collin's quarterback instincts took
charge. As he had countless times with
Lou at the ready, Collin began his snap
