three matching sets. In one case, the antlers were 10 yards apart and I found them
at the same time. But I had to search on
consecutive days to recover the others.
With one of them, the antlers were about
150 yards apart; with the other, about 300.
Scanning the area, it seemed likely
the buck had come either from my left
or my right. Since I was in no hurry to
go a second round with the laurel patch,
I headed off to my left - a mostly open
area with hemlocks scattered throughout.
I searched methodically, checking
everything that resembled the curve of
an antler or a tine. If you hunt for sheds, I
don't have to tell you countless things in
the outdoors resemble shed antlers.
Binoculars help to identify imposters
as sticks, roots, blades of grass or whatever else.
About once every thousand times,
FINDING SHEDS
I start shed hunting in January, but I
hunt hard through April, and even into
May while spring-turkey hunting. I found
two sheds while hunting gobblers in 2017.
I found the 68-inch antler April 12 and the
matching set described in the story, plus
another antler, on April 15.
On the season, I ended up with 22
antlers, and put between 80 and 100 miles
on my boots -looking for them. Some days
I walked a couple miles; other days, more
than 10.
In recent years, I've taken to hiking
deep into state game lands and state forests, where bucks can and do get old. The
68-inch antler was found on game lands
following a 1 ½-mile hike.

I'd worked my way in a perhaps 300yard circle, zigzagging back and forth
through the grassy clearing, checking
under each hemlock and looking down
every deer trail I crossed. But before long
I was back where I'd found the antler, and
hadn't found a second one.
Standing there, I looked down to my
right. No more than 8 feet away, like it
appeared out of thin air, was the other
antler.
I'd been standing only a couple feet
from the second antler when I took the
picture of the first. But I was so focused
on picking up the antler I never looked
all around the area where I'd taken the
picture.
I learned a valuable lesson that day:
when you find an antler always look
around the immediate area for the match,
because you never know where it might
be.
