of Swengel, and launched a career of his
own.
A friend of Matt's dad, Harold Stoneberger, asked Matt to build him a custom
flintlock gun for turkey hunting. Harold
didn't know exactly what he wanted.
And Matt had some parts from a vintage
muzzleloading shotgun and a nice piece
of walnut he would turn into Harold's
20-gauge transition fowler smoothbore.
This would begin Matt's own muzzleloading for turkeys, and his flintlock
encounter with the Cell Tower Gobbler.
Harold owned a farm in Iowa and
guided turkey hunters there. He invited
Matt to come out, and on that first trip,
Matt commented that he had never killed
a turkey.
Harold made it his mission to change
that, and Matt used the very fowler he
built to take a gobbler with a 10½-inch
beard and nearly 1½-inch spurs.
But things were just getting started.
Harold convinced Matt to take the fowler
back to Pennsylvania to try and kill a bird
with it there.
Matt didn't argue. And Harold had a
spot in mind. Some friends of his owned
a property near Homer City, Indiana
County, that was holding several gobblers.
Through Harold, Matt was given permission to hunt there.
Setting up just inside a woods line as
dawn broke, Matt soon began calling.
A gobbler responded immediately, and
came across a powerline to check things
out. As soon as it stepped into the woods,
it stretched its vibrant red neck and blue
and white head.
"I brought up the long barrel of the
fowler, but I think the bird heard the click
of the hammer going to full cock," Matt
said. "I missed that bird at 30 yards. It was
all smoke and no feathers."
Matt was disappointed in missing his
first Pennsylvania gobbler, and he said it
wasn't easy phoning in his report to friend
Chris O'Hara.
But Chris told Matt to cheer up. There
were other birds, Chris assured him. In
fact, Chris would be able to meet up with
Matt in just a bit, and he said he had an
ideal spot in mind.
When Chris arrived, he told Matt
they'd be hunting the Cell Tower Gobbler, a mature-but-uncooperative tom
that made its home near a cell tower, way
down in the bottom of a cove.
"We tried every tactic in the book hunting this bird," Chris said. "But something
always seems to go wrong and we just
can't get him!"
Matt and Chris hiked to the top of a hill
and into a large, open field. Chris called
and a booming gobble, gobble, gobble
echoed back from the cove below.
"C'mon, we're going to try for him,"
Chris whispered to Matt. "Nothing's
going to happen, but we're going to try."
Matt and Chris walked out across the
field and took a tractor path to another
field, then continued downhill and set up
along a 10-foot wide fencerow. The spot
gave them a good view of the field and
they could see down into the cove. They
placed their decoys, and Chris began
calling.
