maybe considerable ones - in the ability
levels and drive of individual dogs. And
maybe I just have been blessed with
some good ones.
But it would seem sparking a beagle's interest in rabbits is only a matter
of introducing the two, and a lot of what
follows takes care of itself naturally.
Dogs need some time to catch on,
though.
While there's generally no harm in
working to start a puppy on rabbits soon
after it can walk, and dogs that begin
training when young might well get
going sooner, it's unfair to expect too
much, too soon from a puppy.
There's a certain level of maturation
necessary for a playful puppy to hone its
focus, then put together all of the pieces
that go into running tracks and circling
rabbits. And even then, there will be
work to do.
Understanding the pace at which
beagles typically develop is important
for those training their first pups. And
as a dog progresses, trainers can make
things easier on themselves by maintaining faith their puppies' natural abilities indeed will reveal themselves.
Training a first beagle is unlike training a second or third. Not only is it an
entirely new experience for the trainer,
the opportunity for the dog and trainer

to make a go of it in the coming hunting
season relies wholly on getting this one
dog field-ready.
That's a more pressure-packed scenario than, say, training a second dog
to hunt alongside one that's running
rabbits already. Even if the second dog
doesn't get up to speed, the season isn't
at risk.
When I trained my first beagle,
which early on consisted almost entirely of taking the dog afield to try to
encounter rabbits, I worried a lot about
important characteristics that seemed to
be missing.
My dog didn't seem to like getting in
the brush, and I'd stand on the other side
of small patches of honeysuckle and
briar to encourage her to come through
to me. She didn't seem to want to chase
rabbits, so I tried to build her drive by
dangling one I'd kept frozen from a rope
flung over a rafter.
None of this hurt her, but in retrospect, none of it was necessary either.
Once she ran her first track, she was
hunting for the next, and she made discernible progress nearly every time out.
She just needed to mature enough to
get there.
For me, knowing better what to expect has been a benefit in training these
latest puppies.
