Nature's Way?
HE PHRASE "NATURE'S BALANCE" sounds so primitive today.
Maybe it's because most people are convinced that wildlife and wild things
need our management, that conservation and not established biodiversity has held
Penn's Woods together for the past century.
But the truth is - at least for now - our ecological communities are the product of their
biological foundation - natural selection. They truly are what makes wild Pennsylvania
and holds it together.
Theirs hasn't been an easy existence as our Commonwealth is besieged by a neverending stream of foreign invaders. Think of how much our state has changed because of
the chestnut blight, gypsy moths, woolly adelgids, white-nose syndrome fungus, emerald
ash borers and zebra mussels. Then add to it European carp and starlings, feral hogs and
Norway rats. You can top it off with mile-a-minute-weed and Japanese knotweed.
Today, it's tough to see Penn's Woods as it was. Try as rivers occasionally do to flush
their impurities, they cannot return to those times when they were more complete ecosystems, because contributing members of their communities are gone and others that
don't fit are impinging their ecological harmony.
Forests are in the same boat. Although trees still stand together creating forest, the
forest's composition is lacking, and often shortchanges its historically dependent wildlife
of what it needs. That's because faster-growing and more aggressive invasive trees and
plants are rooting faster than those forests have provided.
Nature often is slow to respond to, or compromised by invasive species, against which
native animals and plants might not have a defense. And when those species are lost, it
creates more instability for an ecosystem that is reliant on the mutual contributions of its
members.
In today's smaller world, the assault on nature's historic balance and its naturally selected
cast of continental denizens is greater than ever before. There isn't a "clean continent" on
the planet. Invasive species plague everyone.
It took nature centuries upon centuries to sort out what belonged where, and the protection of oceans to ensure it. But now all of that has changed. It's hard to say what species
will win out; it's a real free-for-all. But there's no doubt that some indigenous plants and
animals will lose out.
In such contests, invasives have a strong foothold. Human intervention - herbicides,
spraying, controlled burns - really is the only way to slow them down. That's not exactly
nature's way. But if historic compatibility and occurrence matter, maybe our native fauna
and flora will yet find a way to outcompete invasives. It is, however, a real uphill battle.
