Unless a disability prevents it, hunters are required to hunt at least 10 feet off

start pushing out patches on the other,
success came in somewhat small doses.
Nine deer were taken on the day. In
some years the hunt has been held, nearly
that many were taken by a single hunter.
But the weather might not be the only
thing contributing to reduced harvest.
Through the nearly annual controlled hunt
- the only day on which hunting is permitted on the largely landlocked farm park - a
swollen deer herd has been trimmed and
made healthier in the process.
It's one of the reasons Norristown
Farm Park won't hold a controlled hunt
this January, said Ken Shellenberger, park
supervisor.
Agricultural damage and deer-vehicle
collisions in the area seem to be down,
Shellenberger said. And taking a year off
also will allow time to consider format
changes to what recently has been an
antlerless-only, late-season hunt, potentially addressing what appears to be a herd
that has too many bucks compared to does
and reduced fawn numbers, he said.
Originally owned by William Penn,
and now owned by the state Department
of Conservation and Natural Resources,
and operated and maintained by Montgomery County, the Norristown Farm
Park is not neatly defined.
Its primary purpose is to provide passive recreation. A network of trails - 8
miles of them paved - splinter through
the park. Yet, the Norristown State Hospital remains in operation on a parcel
surrounded by the park, and a number of
