Sometimes we set goals well ahead
of opening day and spend our seasons working to reach them.
But sometimes goals don't come about until we've spent
some time afield, with some success.
That's what happened to me last season, trapping in northcentral Pennsylvania.
I focused early in the season on raccoons. But I couldn't
pass up the chance to pick up a gray fox or two, maybe even
a coyote, so I made about a dozen canine sets between my
best raccoon locations.
I'd been catching lots of raccoons, opossums and skunks
in my raccoon sets when, late in the season's second week,
as I drove down a lane to check more traps, I saw a gray
fox in one of my canine sets.
That early-season catch got me thinking about the possibility of what I called a "Pennsylvania Steel Grand
Slam" - a longtime goal of mine to catch a gray fox,
red fox, coyote and bobcat, all in one season.
I began to make more canine sets as a result. I figured
I could catch a coyote without much problem. I'd scouted
some areas during the offseason that were a good bet to
produce.
It was the red fox that worried me.
In my area, red foxes are few and far between. I'd harvested
just one in my more than 20 years of trapping and hunting
predators - and that was a hunting harvest 12 years earlier in
which I'd called in the fox.
But trail cameras I'd set up at two properties where I trap
captured images of red foxes.
While one red showed up only about once a week during
the summer months, the other was passing through nightly.
Never having caught a red fox in a trap, I had research to
do. I read many articles and watched many videos on trapping
red foxes and making sets. But in the end, I decided just to
set as I do for coyotes, and hope to get lucky.
