Last Stand

OR A DEER HUNTER, the season's
last stand is bittersweet. You're out there
again, watchful and still, alert with every
sense. But it's the last time you'll be in the
woods, in just that same way, for nearly
a year.
Last January, I made my last stand in a hollow folded
into a slope on game lands in Warren County. I'd climbed
from a friend's camp, flintlock cradled in the crook of
an arm. Hope soared when a white tail flicked in
gray forest above. The deer was dawdling across
the slope, intent on acorns. The woods were wet and bare of snow, suggesting I
might sneak within range. So I picked an oak with roots that clutched an elevated
knob commanding the hollow's upper basin, tucked my seat-pad against its bole
and settled in.
Just the view was worth the climb. Below, the brown swollen Allegheny roiled
over its islands, where ravens wheeled above shuddering maples, buffeted by
flood and ice. Above me, the basin embraced my shot-zone, laced by deer trails.
It felt good, like something might happen.
Of course, something did. A hushed rustle rose from below and left, and a
red fox galloped out of the brush and scaled the knob where I perched. The fox
ran with fluid ease, with sounds too faint for its size and speed. It saw me at 15
feet and stopped with a jolt, then scrambled off our hump and melted away in
the basin above. Later, its raspy barks cut through the dusk.
It seemed to darken quickly then; only minutes left of another year's hunts.
Something moved with a scrabbling sound and a presence felt near, yet hard to
pin. It scrabbled again above me - as in straight up - on the same oak that supported
my back. I craned my neck and a black squirrel and I both startled, staring, our
snouts just 6 feet apart. The squirrel moved first, glancing backward as it climbed.
I gathered my gear and picked my way downward to the river's liquid hum.
Far below glowed a campfire, a little farther right than I'd reckoned. Another full
season was ended, a long 10 months 'til the next.
