Many of us older flintlock faithful got our starts in the 1970s, when
mountain-man movies were popular, excitement for the Bicentennial was strong and Pennsylvania's new muzzleloader deer seasons
were inspiring many hunters to buy muzzleloaders, hopefully to go
out to "make meat."
Of course, flintlock hunting was new to almost everyone.
With few old-timers to serve as mentors, at times there was more
enthusiasm than sense.
More than a few hunters hurriedly assembled flintlock kits
received on Christmas morning so they could hunt the next day.
Still, legions of orange-clad Jeremiah Johnsons festooned with
powder horns, possibles bags, and the occasional Bowie knife or
tomahawk, exuberantly charged forth.
It was a learning curve from the start. We taught each other how
to load, shoot and clean flintlocks, and mark ramrods to know when
rifles were properly loaded.
Other lessons came harder.
SPARKING INTEREST
Getting those new flintlocks to go off reliably often was the most
frustrating part for us as "greenhorns."
Waiting through hours of bitter winter cold for an opportunity that
ended with the dull, metallic clack of the hammer hitting frizzen; the
anticlimactic flash of priming powder that failed to ignite the main
charge; or the long, delayed PSSSSSSSTTTTT!!!!!!!!!! BANG!!! of
a hangfire; were all-too-frequent occurrences.
Strong sparks and dry priming powder practically eliminate such
misfires. Some flintlocks spark better with cut agate "flints," others
work best with hand-knapped English flints. Sometimes it's better to
mount flints bevel-down; sometimes bevel-up to get longer contact
with the frizzen. Either is OK, as long as the flint points into the pan
when the hammer is down, which indicates sparks will be directed
to the priming powder.
We learned quickly to start hunts with a fresh, sharp flint: to adjust
it carefully and make sure it was clamped firmly so it wouldn't be
