When cleaning or maintaining firearms, it's always best
to use a padded vise, eliminating the possiblity the gun
will slip out of your hands as you work. Here, a shotgun is
held in a vise as a bore snake is pulled through the barrel.
Many have turned to bore snakes for cleaning efficiency,
and the fact they won't harm a barrel's crown.
There once was a time when most
penetrating solvents contained ammonia,
and many still do.
Ammonia dissolves copper deposits,
but is slow to work on carbon residue.
Therefore, the barrel needs to be
soaked, through several applications, and
the solvent given time to work. Elbow
grease and a cleaning rod topped with a
bristle brush, then a few passes with cloth
patches, still is needed to finish the job
before coating with a light preservative oil.
But many never give ammonia solvents enough time before swabbing the
bore out, which leads to longer cleaning
sessions than necessary. At the same
time, however, if left in the bore too long,
ammonia solvents have a tendency to dry
or etch the steel, which facilitates moisture
accumulation, and leads to rusting.
Additionally, such solvents can degrade
wood finishes, not to mention stink up the
house.
When using ammonia solvents such
as Hoppe's No. 9, Butch's Bore Shine
and Sweet's 7.62, follow the prescribed

application time. When finished, swab the
bore with patches until the patch comes
out dry. Then pull through an oiled patch,
then a dry patch, to leave a light preservative coating on the steel.
There also are ammonia/oil-based
solvents such as Montana Extreme that
can be left in the bore because they won't
dry out steel.
Meanwhile, barrel-conditioning oils
applied after a good cleaning reduce
deposits.
In the past decade or so, a number of
effective liquid or foam solvents - such as
Ballistol, Wipe-Out, M-Pro7, Slip 2000,
Hoppe's Elite and KG 12 - have hit the
market.
These remove both carbon and copper
and are ammonia- and petroleum-free, as
well as biodegradable.
They may take a little longer to remove
fouling, but they don't etch or allow steel
to dry out, and they don't affect fiber or
wood stocks.
Follow the directions, and leave them
wet in the barrel for the prescribed time,
