What on Earth?
OLKS RARELY AFIELD in Penn's Woods probably don't identify with the
myriad wild creatures and organisms that define its depth and being.
They all matter or mattered. The American chestnut. The white-tailed deer.
The passenger pigeon. The bald eagle.
But recognizing their value sometimes is an afterthought, or worse, an unfitting epitaph.
There isn't a state in America that doesn't have its own tale of wildlife woe. It's a
natural resource that historically has been exploited from sea to shining sea.
Maybe that's why the theme for Earth Day 2019 is "protect our species."
Since 1970, the number of animals worldwide has fallen by 40 percent, according
to the Earth Day Network. One in every eight wild birds is threatened with global
extinction. Dozens of species are going extinct every day.
Shaped by the ages and often dependent upon one another to survive, many of our
plants and animals are in a fix as civilization swallows or taints their living space and
reshuffles their unique ecological communities through intentional and unintentional
species elimination.
"In nature, nothing exists alone," Rachel Carson wrote in Silent Spring more than
50 years ago. It's always been that way. Life on Earth relies on the interdependency
of ecological communities. It establishes the core of biodiversity. Without that direct
and indirect cooperation, no species has a chance.
Excluding foreign invaders, what has been and is part of our outdoors has been
there beyond our years. Its prevalence was a product of its ability to fit in and prosper.
But its future is anything but secure.
The planet's staggering wildlife losses occur because its people need more of
everything and wildlife is forced to do more with less. It isn't working.
In my lifetime, I've witnessed America's "Great Environmental Awakening" and
the chaos created by countries and businesses that compromise everything to get
ahead. What I see today is not what I anticipated.
Maybe each generation feels that as it approaches its golden years and recalls
the sweeping accomplishments and compromises made in its time. I look fondly
upon the gains of bald eagles and fishers, the elimination of DDT and improved
management of society's waste.
But it's hard not to notice the continuing loss of habitat, the increasing willingness
of people to disregard laws that protect natural resources and the decline of wildlife
and wild places.
It's easy enough to look the other way, to ignore wildlife's plight. But can you feel
that way knowing there is more you can do to save Penn's Woods and its denizens for
your children's children? I hope not.
