tired, but it's a 'good tired' as some might
say. A lone hen slips out of the woods
below and wades into a large swath of tall
grasses nourished by a seep. By now, she
might be incubating a full clutch of eggs.
Maybe she was taking a short break to
drink and feed.
With binoculars, I watched the precise
darting of her pale blue head as she fed
feverishly on insects. Dandelion seed
heads rise and float away in her wake.
Sleek and shining, her bronze feathers
reflect the cerulean sky and green grasses,
then muted brown again as she returns to
the folds of the shadowy woods.
I pictured her back at her nest, sitting
on her eggs. It was as if she transported
the sun's rays from field to forest. Insect
life ignited by the sun, now a protein fuel
in her crop, transferred over time as heat to
the precocial lives developing within the
shells, lives that will amazingly, in another
few weeks, be traversing forest and field
with her, flying up to roost, flourishing
in the wonder of summer, cradled in the

aching beauty of these uplands.
The gobbler, nature's bold warrior in
his plated iridescent armor, is the focus of
the hunt, but it is the hen that embodies
the season.
On my way back across the field, I
pick up a long, barred turkey feather, a
gobbler's primary feather as told by the tip
which is worn from dragging it while he
struts. I twirl it between my fingers, then
flick gnats from my face with it. I think
about that brief, six-day season 50 years
earlier, and the exponential growth in wild
turkey conservation and the tidal wave of
industries that followed. Who could have
ever imagined?
Beyond the obvious genesis of this
grand pursuit, the armature upon which it
was built remains the same. It is a celebration of the rites of spring, of being alive; a
time to recharge the spirit as proclaimed
each morning by the gobbler; a time to
wander the hills and to wonder at the
promise of life to come harbored in pale,
speckled eggs.
