Turner and colleagues has shown that modifying bat hibernacula to lower their subsurface temperature gives endangered cave bats a fighting chance against white-nose syndrome.
Colder cave temperatures limit the growth of the fungus that
causes white-nose syndrome (WNS), Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd), which prefers slightly warmer temperatures.
The colder environment also reduces the energy demands of
hibernating bats - energy that might help them survive the winter
and heal infections caused by Pd.
With bat hibernacula, however, each site is unique, so this
colder-climate fix will not work everywhere. The effort to modify
hibernacula is best targeted at sites with a downward slope, and
often includes adding another opening to help gather the heavier
and colder air, which pools in the shaft's bottom, creating a safer
environment for hibernating bats.
Working with biologists at Temple University and Ohio University, Turner found bats using colder areas of infected hibernacula - a
mere 2.5-degree difference - substantially increases their chance
of successfully completing hibernation.
Staggering bat losses have Pennsylvania, and many other states,
trying to keep alive every cave bat possible.
The challenge is to minimize Pd's stranglehold on hibernating cave bats. This predominantly Old-World fungus, which first
surfaced in New York in the winter of 2006-07, colonizes and
consumes live skin on the muzzle, ears and wings of bats, which
forces them out of hibernation more frequently, causing them to
use the energy they've stored to complete hibernation.
It's energy that cannot be replaced on an insect-free winter
landscape, so bats eventually die from malnutrition and exposure.
Pennsylvania's first cases of WNS were in Alexander Caverns
and Shindle Mine in Mifflin County in the winter of 2008-09. Since
then, Pd has colonized most known bat hibernacula throughout
the eastern United States, causing population losses for bats that
might take a century or more to reverse.
And that's only if cave bats, which give birth to one pup annually, can mount and sustain a recovery.
The colder-cave response by hibernating bats was noticed by
biologists doing annual hibernacula survey work, then confirmed
through data analysis. In those surveys, some little brown and tricolored bats were congregating in the colder, drier areas of hibernacula used by big brown bats and Eastern small-footed myotis,
species that haven't suffered the critical losses of other cave bats.
But was their hibernation adjustment working?
