Coyote Backstory

OR A LONG TIME, the state's coyotes were thought a hybrid blend of Canadian
gray wolf and western coyote.
But research would eventually conclude the coyotes of Penn's Woods are a product
of two colonizing fronts: one from Ohio involving western coyotes and one from
Canada involving gray wolf-western coyote hybrids. The distinction helps to explain
some of the differences in size and coloration observed over time among Pennsylvania
coyotes.
Accounts about some of those first 'yotes suggest they were more wolfy than
western coyote dog-like. Their size, paws, even heads were larger than anything that
had immigrated from the Midwest. They had a commanding presence.
Today, it isn't as easy to notice that wolf in coyote clothing. Most Pennsylvania
coyotes seem, well, coyote-like; typical tricolor 30- to 40-pounders.
That isn't to say that those wolf traits aren't distinguishable. They still show up in
skull examinations, even coat colors. But that big yodel dog so noticeable decades ago,
isn't as prominent anymore.
Coyote habitat choices also aren't what they used to be. At one time, 'yotes ran the
state's mountains, visiting our flatter places only after dark. Now, they're apt to pop up
anywhere at any time. Like western coyotes, they don't seem as fussy, and are willing
to scavenge roadkill and work farm country.
Western 'yotes are at home in the open country; it's where they were rooted for
centuries. Those wolfy northern immigrants weren't; they preferred forested remoteness.
Now they're one, incredibly adaptive, making the best of whatever their
surroundings offer. It's that flexibility that makes them they so capable at a time when
Pennsylvania endures dramatic landscape changes.
Think about the upheaval. Wind turbines, Marcellus shale development, farm
closures, suburban expansion, new highways and pipelines, even deforestation.
Yet, the coyote thrives.
This animal is a world-champion survivor. Over the past century, it's unlikely any
other American wildlife species has faced more unrelenting cruelty and viciousness
than the coyote. It's nothing like that poor fellow that once lost handily to the
roadrunner on weekend mornings.
If you get that chance to watch one in the woods, to see it fit in, you'll know
immediately that this critter is here to stay. It is the apex predator, the ultimate
opportunist. It has learned to make the most of its existence in Pennsylvania, just like
the red fox once did.
That's what's so profound about this little wolf. Throughout American history come
what may the coyote has found a way to stay where it wants. It's not an animal you
want to bet against.
