I
wore a white one when I got married nearly 40 years ago, and a blue one
for my high-school prom (even more years ago), but the only tuxedo I now
occasionally wear is the "Pennsylvania Tuxedo."
I'm referring, of course, to the Woolrich black-and-red plaid hunting pants,
shirt and coat, so popular in the 1940s, '50s and even into the '60s here in the
Keystone State deer woods.
The Woolrich company got its start back in 1830 with a mill built in northcentral
Pennsylvania, northeast of Lock Haven in Clinton County. The settlement where
the mill is located first was named Factoryville, then Richville and finally Woolrich
in 1888. The company is still in operation there today.
Woolrich initially marketed its clothing products to those who worked the
lumber camps, farmers and, later on, railroad workers. It's the hunting clothing,
however, that many recall most fondly.
When I started hunting from our Forest County cabin in 1969, hunters in
nearby camps still wore the old Woolrich. You see it less frequently today. But
the outfit often brings back of lot of memories and nostalgia.
We received more feedback by phone, letters and email about the December
2014 Game News "throw-back" edition cover than any I can remember in my
25-year tenure with the magazine. Two things on that cover really struck a chord
with readers - the 1964 Jeep and the hunter clad in the Woolrich hunting outfit.
I found a Woolrich black-and-red jacket and pants set made in the 1940s on
eBay a few years ago and bought it for my hunting paraphernalia collection. I
wear it two or three times a season, but the conditions have to be just right. It has
to be awfully cold and I have to be hunting on stand. The outfit is heavy and it
definitely keeps you warm, too warm and heavy to do much moving. The outfit
gets even heavier when it's wet, although an advantage of wool is that when it
is wet it retains body heat. Of course, in most gun seasons, a blaze orange vest
still needs to be worn over the coat and an orange hat.
When I get "all-dressed up" for a day of deer hunting, I don a green-and-black
plaid shirt with red "fish-eye" buttons I added to the ensemble, and sometimes
will carry the Savage Model 99 lever-action rifle to complete the look.
Once, I was deer hunting with a group in North Carolina and just for laughs
showed up the first morning of the hunt at the lodge for breakfast clad in my
Woolrich outfit. I didn't get the reaction I had hoped for, though, because, after
all, it's a tradition that belongs in Penn's Woods.
