I arrived in camp on Sept. 13 where I was greeted by Jim and his friend, Kevin Tone, who hoped to share in the experience. Jim had just finished shooting his bow, and he soon began telling me about the 38 morning they had scouting. Al Morris, a world-champion elk caller, was in camp to call for Jim. And he and Larry had taken Jim and Kevin out to give them a taste of what to expect. Jim had never heard a bull bugle before that morning and, after getting more than an earful, he was amped. It didn't sound like there'd be any shortage of opening-day action. A few hours later, I joined the group on one last preseason scouting trip.
