BY JOHN KASUN Eyeing up sights By John Kasun EYEING SIGHTS While those using primitive equipment rely on their instincts to guide an arrow to the target, most bowhunters never take a shot at a deer without first settling a sight pin on its vitals. But not all sights are alike. They come in a variety of configurations, with pins of different diameters and colors, and with different mounts and amenities - some simple; others employing advanced technology. As often is the case, different designs have evolved from different intended purposes, so one sight might give shoot- ers an advantage in one situation, but not another. And individuals sometimes must weigh the value of such advantages against increased cost. Let's take a closer look at sights, their uses and the advantages they might hold. FIXED OR MOVABLE Bow sights typically fall into one of two basic categories: fixed-pin or movable-pin. Fixed-pin sights allow pins to be set, then locked into place, for shooting at specific distances. STARING DOWN OFTEN-OVERLOOKED DIFFERENCES JANUARY 2020 57
