Night Life
URING a recent blood draw, a nurse lamented about how difficult it is to recruit
physicians to small towns. Somewhat tongue-in-cheek she suggested, "I suppose
there's just not enough night life."
I immediately replied that it depends upon the person and his or
her definition of "night life."
There's no shortage of night life among my friends, and predator hunting tops the list. Think about it. What's more fast-andfurious than having a gray fox's red light-enhanced eyes, running
through cornflakes-crunchy leaves, straight at you. Add another
gray or two into the mix and it becomes a veritable mêlée. I've
had foxes knock over my predator call just yards in front of me,
and even had one vault across my outstretched legs.
I became hooked on nighttime predator hunting during my
college years, when fur prices for grays reached $45, and reds
commanded $80. It was possible to pay a year's tuition, including
books, with your fur check. Not so today, with fur prices a fraction of what they used
to be, and nighttime predator hunting largely a recreational pursuit.
The basics of predator hunting are easy enough to learn. Hunters draw furbearers into
gun range with various calls that appeal to their curiosity or hunger. Today's electronic
calling systems, headlamps, gun-mounted lights and specialized optics make my old
gear seem prehistoric. It'll help new predator hunters better detect incoming quarries
and perfect their technique. But you still need to know how and where to find furbearers.
Pennsylvania has a four-month fox hunting season; there is no closed season on
coyotes. January and February figure prominently in predator hunting. The cold and
snow of a Pennsylvania winter usually increase a canine's need for nourishment, so
it's constantly hunting for food.
The pang of hunger can make them more vulnerable to mouse and vole squeaks and
cottontail calls. Fox-distress calls, including the old, reliable gray-fox-pup-in-distress,
remain the bread-and-butter of fox-calling.
Some hunters still favor traditional handheld calls, often constructed with various
synthetic materials or wood. I have a vintage curly-maple call with a sinew lanyard in
my collection. It has no manufacturer's brand or other identifying marks other than
an intricately carved fox paw. It's a real keepsake.
On occasion, it has turned the tide of a hunt when nothing else would work. I have
been told that it is an antique and should be shelved for safekeeping. But I believe a
little night life is clearly what its maker intended for it and I'm happy to oblige.
