to guide him.
For fall hunting, Joe uses a vintage
Winchester Model 43 .218 Bee with
a Leupold 3-9x scope and cartridges
tipped with 46-grain hollow-point
bullets.
The longest shot he's made with
the rifle was on a gobbler in a picked
cornfield at 100 yards.
Joe said he likes the challenge of
hunting with a rifle in the fall, and he
watches fields and benches just over
the ridges. He believes other hunters
often push fall flocks from lower fields
and farmland up the slopes into lessaccessible terrain.
Joe said gobbler flocks stay
relatively close to hen flocks in fall,
but hens often won't put up with
gobblers. So when calling, Joe mimics
an upset hen.
Joe doesn't scout in the woods or
call before the spring season arrives,
but he drives the back roads in the
area he hunts and stops to listen for
gobblers.
"You learn a lot more by listening
than you do by talking," he said.
Joe hunts private and state game
lands in Columbia and Luzerne
counties.
And while he hunts as much as he
can, on public land, he particularly
likes midweek because there's less
hunting pressure.
Joe hunts in all weather conditions
and particularly likes to hunt on the
morning after a spring rain. He says
the birds are active then and likely to
be in fields.
"I believe turkeys spend a lot of
time in fields where other birds can
see them," he said.
While Joe will hunt in the afternoon
when it's permitted in the second half

of the spring season, and he once
harvested a 20-pound gobbler with a
10-inch beard at the top of a mountain
as it most likely was headed to roost,
he prefers hunting the mornings.
He's never used ground blinds,
instead sitting on the ground with his
back against the biggest tree he can
find, and staying perfectly still.
"Movement is what scares birds,"
he said.
Joe uses only one plastic fullsize hen decoy when decoying in the
spring.
He sets it about 20 yards away,
facing him, which often brings the
gobbler in front of the decoy, providing
a good shot opportunity.
When hunting with his single-shot
10-gauge in the spring, Joe prefers No.
6 shot for the dense pattern it places in
the head and neck area. He only takes
shots at 40 yards and under.
MILESTONES AHEAD
After 100 punched tags, Joe
Trivelpiece said he'll continue to hunt
turkeys until he stops getting excited as
one comes in to his calls.
But the mountains seem to get steeper
every year, he admitted.
Recently, however, Joe has additional
motivation to keep the whole thing
going. He has begun mentoring his
grandson Laif, whom he hopes will
carry on the family's turkey-hunting
tradition.
You see, Joe's son Jacob, who also
was a passionate turkey hunter, passed
away, and Joe keeps his memory alive
every day he steps into the turkey woods.
Here's to hoping the pair will hit
many new milestones together in the
years to come.
