been truer for me than in turkey hunting.

Another tactic that has helped me a lot
in the late season involves patterning a
gobbler, then mimicking the hens around
him by calling softly and infrequently.
Less is more when it comes to calling in the late season. While flocks in
early spring are consistently vocal with
each other, I find that by late season,
their vocalization drops off enormously.
There's no need for a roosting tom to
gobble multiple times when he knows his
hens are nearby.
Likewise, there is no need for hens
to call when they know where a gobbler is roosted. Under such conditions,
calling loudly and frequently no longer
is consistent with how the turkeys are
communicating.
I witnessed this play out in the second
half of a season several years ago. I'd
killed a gobbler on the first day of the
season - the first and only time that has
happened to me - and decided to spend
the rest of the season targeting a specific
bird I had seen while preseason scouting.
It took several days to confirm that bird
was still alive, as he hardly ever gobbled.
But one day he did, which put a bead on
where he was roosting. For the next two
weeks, I got as close as I could to that
gobbler and learned he had a hen near his
roost tree. Each morning, he stayed in his
tree until she yelped once or twice. Then
he would fly silently to her location.
I watched this arrangement unfold
several times over the season's last few
days. On the last morning, I was in my
usual position when the hen did not call
to him. Perhaps she was done breeding.
The author's 2011 gobbler, shown below, marked the second time he punched a tag on the
season's final day. He did it again in 2014. And on May 25, 2017, this impressive longbeard
was one of two that raced toward an excited hen, abruptly changing the "worst season ever."
