the predawn darkness, it was greeted by
light rain. Undeterred, they set up in the
managed dove field for a morning hunt.
What happened next convinced
the group that daybreak for mourning
doves is the way to go.
"Once the sky brightened in the
morning, I couldn't load the gun fast
enough," Laudermilch said. "My dog
retrieved a lot of doves that morning."
Still, there are challenges when it
comes to hunting doves after first light.
The rising sun can be an issue, Laudermilch said.
On the game lands, the roost site is
on the northeast side of one field, and
as the sun rises from the east it can be
difficult to scan the sky. Laudermilch
sets up 250 yards from the roost location, and watches his dog's reactions
instead of the bright sky to know when
a flock is arriving.
It's also important to not be late.
Doves are early risers, Laudermilch
said, and it's critical to be set up and
ready before first light.
That was a lesson he and his son,
Seth, learned during the second week
last season.
"We were 15 minutes late and as we
were getting the dog out and walking
in we had birds flying on top of us,"
Laudermilch said. "Like waterfowl or a
gobbler flying off the roost, you've got
to be there pretty darn early."
While dove hunting in both the
morning and afternoon offers plenty
of fast and constant action, the number
of hunters pursuing them in the
state has declined. Pennsylvania had
approximately 94,000 dove hunters
in 1990, compared to just 17,000 in
2018.
Laudermilch believes the opportunity presented with hunting doves in the
morning could generate more interest
in the sport.
It certainly worked for his group.
"I really feel if hunters tried a
morning hunt, they would do it more
often," he said. "It's great for kids as
well, as there's typically plenty of
space around a field and the action
is steady. You don't see many people
hunting doves, and I think it's a missed
opportunity."
Managed dove fields, like this one on state game lands in Lycoming County, offer doves an
abundance of food. That alone draws doves to managed fields. But when surrounding areas
satisfy doves' other needs for water, gravel and conifer roosting cover, it's even more ideal.
