lighting his every feature.
The buck lowered his head
and I lost sight of him. I
reached for my bow, my hand
sweating as I wrapped my
fingers around the release.
The buck reappeared
downslope. If he continued on his course, he'd
walk through an opening
that would provide my only
opportunity for a shot.
Suddenly, however, he
turned sharply and started up
the incline, straight toward
me. I slowly raised my bow
and waited.
In my many hunts from
this stand, I'd never seen a
deer take this route.
Seconds felt like minutes.
My breathing became heavy.
My heart raced. The buck had moved
within 25 yards, but I couldn't shoot
because of low-hanging branches.
But as the buck neared a small opening, I drew my bow and held as still as
possible, feeling my back muscles tense
up. The kisser button resting on my
lip, the buck took a step, then another,
and entered the opening. I placed the
pin behind his shoulder, slowly let out
a breath and squeezed the release's
trigger, then watched as my arrow hit
exactly where I had aimed.
The buck turned and ran, but dropped
within view, about 40 yards from my
stand.
Tears immediately joined the sweat
beads on my face. I gathered my things
and descended the tree, then contacted
my father, and began field-dressing
the deer. Dad was there by the time I
finished, and we hauled the buck home,
where we put it on ice, then hurried it

to the butcher shop. While I usually
process the deer I harvest, I didn't want
to risk meat spoilage due to warm temperatures, even though it was cooling
off as the sun set.
While the photo of the 8-point near
my stand had given me hope I'd meet up
with him, I didn't expect him to make
an appearance on such a sweltering
evening. In fact, I'd assumed the exact
opposite.
Like many other things, however,
whitetail hunting teaches us to expect
the unexpected.
Although time-tested strategies often
get the best results, it's easy to get
too wrapped up in waiting for perfect
conditions.
Sometimes the best time to be out
in the woods is every chance you get.
And while there's risk in such pursuit, if you're lucky, there also might
be the sweetest reward.
