were equipped with .410 and 20 gauges
that accepted 3-inch shells.
Rifle calibers included: .22 long rifle,
.22 WMR, .17HMR, .22 Hornet, .222
Rem., .223 Rem., .30-30, .357 Mag., and
.357 Max.
Savage chose which shotgun gauge
was matched to a specific rifle caliber.
Guns could not be special ordered.
It's apparent that Savage listened to
the hunters of the day, and the Model 24
had a long run, maintaining its quality and
profitability over that span. Ultimately,
over a million were produced before the
model was discontinued in 2010.
European gun builders pioneered a
variety of rifles and shotguns, and the

popularity of Savage's Model 24 surely
was noticed by Germany's legendary gun
manufacturer, H. Krieghoff Gun Co.
Krieghoff's Teck combination gun
caught on immediately with American
hunters. It could be customized. The top
barrel, for example, could be fitted with
a 12- or 20-gauge 2¾-inch chamber. And
that fact alone gave it an advantage over
Savage's Model 24.
The Teck I own came with a .30-06
rifle barrel that can be swapped for a .222
Remington Mag. barrel. Its original owner
must have liked to hunt small game, turkeys and white-tailed deer.
The Teck's capability to shoot rimfire
cartridges also provided greater flexibility.
A 17-inch insert could be placed into its
12-gauge barrel to accept and fire .22
Mag. cartridges with the squeeze of one
of two triggers.
The Teck's shotgun barrel has a rib
running its length with a fixed sight on
the end. The rib also has two rear flip
sights. The rear sight is used for the shotgun, but also is rotated to the rear for use
when shooting the .30-06. The next sight
forward is flipped into position when
shooting the .222 Mags. The rib also has
a four-claw, rock-solid scope-mounting
system, which was an extra.
At first glance, the stock seems unfinished, which is by design. The stock was
impregnated with synthetic resin, which
was believed to penetrate deep into the
pores of the wood and seal the stock.
A combination gun that's probably
more familiar to readers is the Tikka
Turkey gun, a product of the Tikkakoski
Manufacturing Co., Finland.
The company's history is sketchy,
but in 1967 an Indiana-based company,
advertised the " Versatile Tikka, " two-
