stabilizers that help the bow sit incredibly
still. Some also use a large-diameter arrow
that provides a better chance of cutting a
scoring ring, simply because the arrow
is fatter.
Pennsylvania is fortunate to have a
long list of shooting clubs in nearly every
county. Many of them hold weekend
3-D shoots through the winter, spring
and summer during typical years, though
COVID-19 likely led to many cancellations more recently.
Tracking down where shoots are held
can take some effort, too, since there's no
central database of such events. You often
will have to check with clubs individually
to see what they offer, although some have
websites that list public events.
Those attending shoots pay a fee - usually between $8 and $15 - to shoot that

club's course, a series of perhaps 20 to
40 targets scattered through woods and
fields. You walk the course like you would
playing a round of golf, moving from one
shooting position to the next.
Usually, targets are placed at normal
hunting distances, from 10 to 40 yards, but
sometimes there's a 70- or 80-yard challenge in the mix. But, hey, these are foam
targets. You can't hurt them. So while
such long-distance shooting might not be
ethical in the field, it certainly creates no
dilemma in the world of 3-D.
There's actually a bowhunting benefit
derived from shooting at long distances.
It will tighten your form. The farther out
you shoot, the more that any flaws you
have - dropping your arm, torquing the
bow grip, whatever - will be magnified.
If you can fix those problems to shoot
accurately at 80 yards, 20-yard shots will
seem simple.
And confidence is critical to bowhunting success.
COMPETITION
There are two national organizations
that hold sanctioned 3-D competitions in
Pennsylvania - International Bowhunting
Organization (IBO) and Archery Shooters
Association (ASA).
IBO and ASA tournaments are much
more formal than a local club shoot, with
the emphasis placed on competition,
rather than hunting practice. That doesn't
mean you can't attend an IBO shoot just to
have some fun, but you'll probably notice
the atmosphere is more serious, since
there's often prize money and tournamentseries points at stake.
