rose to about 200,000. But it didn't last.
Fall hunters fell below 100,000 for the
first time in 2019.
As mentioned earlier, turkey
population recruitment was average
statewide in 2020. Here again, though,
it's important to look at the big picture,
not just the statewide snapshot, because
there is variation from WMU to
WMU. Twelve WMUs had declines in
recruitment; 11 had increases. In some
cases, neighboring WMUs had vastly
different recruitment rates, so there is no
overarching regional theme to explain
recruitment gains or losses.
Generally, though, brood-rearing
habitat quality, weather, predation and
disease all affect poult survival. And
these factors vary from WMU to WMU.
" Recently we've had more years with
cold and rainy spring weather than warm
and dry, which probably has been the
hardest on annual turkey reproduction in
many areas, " Casalena said. " We used to
be able to count on an excellent turkey
hatch every 3-5 years, but we no longer
see those spikes. "
That emphasizes the importance of
local turkey management and the need
for strategic fall turkey seasons across
the Commonwealth, Casalena said.
" But don't interpret our management
as responses to a failing turkey
population, " emphasized Casalena.

" Turkey populations are healthy across
the Commonwealth and will provide
outstanding spring hunting. The fall
seasons have always been the primary
tool to manage turkeys, and that's why a
lot is happening on that front now. "
SPRING 2020
The 2020 spring turkey harvest came
in at about 34,500, an eight percent
drop from 2019's spring take, which
wasn't surprising given the belowaverage recruitment in 2018 in many
WMUs. That led to a lower-than-average
percentage of 2-year-old gobblers
last spring in those units. What was
surprising about the 2020 spring harvest,
though, was there were about 13 percent
more hunters afield than in the previous
three-year average.
" The 2020 spring turkey harvest
demonstrated that having more turkey
hunters afield doesn't always translate
into an increased harvest, " said Casalena.
" The increase in hunter pressure likely
was related to stay-at-home orders and
unemployment caused by the COVID-19
pandemic. That uptick in hunter pressure
afield again seems a likely possibility in
the coming spring season. "

Survey reported that COVID-19 didn't
influence the time they spent fall turkey
