hunting. Seventy-two percent said there
was no change; 18 percent reported an
increase, and 11 percent noted they had
less time.
Looking at spring turkey season
hunter participation from a historical
perspective illustrates Penn's Woods
isn't overflowing with turkey hunters,
that now might be the best time ever to
get out there and match wits with the
boss of the mountain.
From 1983 to 2016, spring turkey
hunter numbers averaged between
210,000 and 250,000. Then they
averaged about 170,000 from 2017 to
2019. Even with 2020's increase in spring
turkey hunters, there's still plenty of
room for everyone, especially when you
consider the Commonwealth's forests
probably accommodate substantially
more deer hunters on peak firearms
season hunting days.
But more importantly, there's been
about a 25 percent drop in hunter
numbers from earlier in the 21st century.
That drop represents opportunity. And
it's up to you to find out where you might
fit in, calling gobblers only you know are
there. And when you find conditions
like these, you'll be hooked on spring
gobblers for life!

Management in 2020 sent turkey
hunter surveys to licensed hunters with
returns from slightly more than 3,300
respondents.
" We asked if they ever hunted turkeys
in Pennsylvania and 28 percent hadn't, "
Casalena said. " Of those who had hunted
turkeys, 70 percent hunted both spring
and fall, while 18 percent hunted only in
the spring, and 12 percent hunted only in
the fall. "
The survey showed the importance of
spring turkey hunting to Commonwealth
hunters. But why they hunted turkeys
might surprise you. Slightly more than
70 percent hunted to enjoy nature;
then, in descending order, the reasons
were: sport/challenge, about 60 percent;
hearing/seeing turkeys, about 55 percent;
harvesting a turkey, about 55 percent;
time with family/friends, about 45
percent; tradition, about 33 percent; and
food, about 22 percent.
Those findings help explain why only
about 13 percent of all spring turkey
hunters purchased the second license,
but those who bought them still set a new
record for sales during 2020, 25,524. The
previous record, set in 2019, was 22,517.
In recent years, first-bird spring turkey
hunter success has consistently hovered
around 20 percent. But more than 50
percent of 25,524 hunters who bought
a second gobbler tag took a bird with
it. It's a strong indicator that experience
- and the preparation it often inspires -
matters.
