After Drew and Dave wrestled the
big buck up onto the flat, Drew's phone
regained service. I examined the pictures
and read the text he had sent at 7:45, right
after he shot the buck. With its 19-inch
spread, this was indeed a second-tier
buck, an older deer with an 8-point rack
that had two tines with broken tips. His
buck would soon claim the widest spread
on the wall. I was thrilled beyond words,
as was Drew, who later admitted he was
still in disbelief that his hunt had unfolded
exactly as foretold.

ND NOW, my many stories that
originated from this hallowed hill
are at an end. The longing, the burning
desire to be there, now quenched. It was
not so much a bit of closure, but in the
greater context of the land, in the vast
timelessness of the woods, only a
slight shifting, of no greater magnitude than a shadow rising and falling
on the trunk of an oak. New eyes
would be watching, but the rhythmic
beating of a feeling heart shared by
all woodlanders would continue on.

return to roost some element, some experience from the day that further defines

As the years pass, you will read in
the cursive script of the grapevines the
record of your days here. Acknowledge
the great oaks, those elders of these slopes
that fuel the forest, but also the fallen oak
upon whose shoulder you sit, that you rest
your gun against to steady your shot. It
will be there waiting to support you for
many seasons to come, before it, too,
melts back into the forest.
