we came upon actual fresh deer droppings, we emptied our mouths and
placed the candy next to the pile on the
ground, paying close attention to which
was which.
Brian called father and son over, and
told the lad it was time he learned how
to read deer sign, including the study of
their droppings. I caught the wry smile
and a twinkle of approval in his dad's
eye . . . he knew some good mischief
was afoot.
My friend explained that, for proper
stand placement, it's important to know
where deer are feeding at night, so you
know which way they'll be traveling in
the morning. Bending down, he picked
up two or three Duds and popped them
in his mouth. The look on the rookie's
face was priceless, his eyebrows raised
and mouth scrunched-up as if he'd
tasted them himself.
After a few seconds of chewing and
letting it all sink in, Brian said that the
deer had been eating in the neighboring farmer's cornfield, and they would
be coming from that direction in the
mornings and returning in the evenings.
Then, turning to me he said, " What do
you think, Gary? "
With no hesitation, but great difficulty keeping a straight face, I bent
down and picked up my share, the
boy's eyes growing bigger and jaw
dropping further as I chewed. After
careful thought I emphatically stated,
" I don't think so. This deer has been
eating clover. I'm sure they are coming
across from the mowed hayfield in the
opposite direction. "
Brian picked up another, sucked on
it a bit, and responded. " I think you're
right. They do taste a bit grassy. " Then,
pointing to the pile he said to the lad,
" Try some. See what you think. "
I'm not sure if his dad was relieved
or a bit disappointed when his son
politely turned down the offer, and we
continued the hunt before revealing to
him it had all been a prank.
There were some other, equallyeducational moments along the line, but
the fun must've helped the enthusiastic
hunter, who now is a father himself,
and has brought a third generation into
our group.

Stone Parker, 9, holds up a nice squirrel he took in
September with his youth model 20-gauge while
hunting alongside his dad, Mike, in East Hanover
Township, Dauphin County. The move to open
squirrel season earlier was motivated, in part, by
providing more opportunities to youth hunters, and
the smile on Stone's face shows just how much he
enjoyed himself in the September squirrel woods.
