But even more importantly, I learned about
myself and what I could accomplish when
I was willing to learn.
So, much to my mother's dismay, on
that beautiful spring Saturday in 2002, my
senior year in college, I woke in the predawn
hours and went turkey hunting with my dad
in southwestern Pennsylvania instead of
attending graduation.
Mom often reminds me she still doesn't
understand my decision, but what I finally
accomplished that day will live with me
forever.
Toms were active on the roost that
morning, but quieted soon after hitting the
ground. The tract we were hunting allowed
us to work the high ground and send calls
into various hollows with minimal disturbance. As mid-morning set in, we came
across a hot tom deep in a ravine. We
breached the top of the hill and set up.
Although the bird had quite a way to
travel, he consistently answered my calls
and quickly closed the gap. At about 200
yards and still out of sight, though, he hung
up at a creek. I called and called, but he
wouldn't come closer, and his consistent,
frequent answers receded to a vague gobble
every now and then.
I couldn't help but think of the close
encounters I'd had in the past. Could this
be just another one?
I needed help and I needed advice, so I
slowly turned to look to my father, who was
set up about 20 yards behind me.
Through the years, and still to this day,
I can always rely on Dad for direction in
uncertain times. What I saw at that moment
still brings a smile to face - with both palms
to the sky and a dumbfounded look in his
eyes that I could barely make out through
his facemask, he simply shrugged his
shoulders.
It was up to me now!
So, I tried something I'd read and heard

others talk about. I backed off the calls and I
scratched the ground with a stick. Patiently,
I waited as time slowed to a crawl. Then I
tried some soft purrs instead of my usual
excited yelps. It was then the mature bird
recharged with excitement and fully committed.
I still remember him in his glory as he
entered my field of view, searching for his
hen. A little luck, my knowledge and his
curiosity gave me the opportunity to successfully harvest him.
That day and the sense of achievement it
provided forever will live inside me.
I graduated from college and as a spring
turkey hunter that day. Both accomplishments help set me on a path of success by
showing me that I could learn from my
mistakes, that it's vital to keep trying, and
that I can work my way through struggles.
And like any true educational experience, the learning never stops with a predetermined date, defined ritual, piece of
paper or mount on the wall. What is truly
amazing, though, is how the art of hunting
reflects upon our path of life.
