There's no mystery about why
freshwater fish numbers are falling so
precipitously, according to the WWF's
report, titled The World's Forgotten
Fishes. Their losses are tied to problems
such as habitat degradation; abstracting
too much water for irrigation; releasing
too much untreated waste; non-point
pollution, the introduction of invasive
non-native species, wildlife crime and
climate change.
Since the 1970s, migratory freshwater
fish populations have declined by an
estimated 76 percent on average, while
populations of freshwater mega-fishes,
such as sturgeon and other fish heavier
than 66 pounds, have declined by an
even more catastrophic 94 percent, the
WWF report noted.
" But very few people have any
inkling of the speed at which freshwater
fishes are being lost - or what the
consequences will be if we don't
reverse this disastrous trend, " the report
emphasized.
Although freshwater covers only
about 1 percent of Earth's surface,
it qualifies as almost irreplaceable
habitat for more than 50 percent of the
world's fishes. Their inhabitation of
these waters was a product of long-term
ecological adjustment. That's why any
sudden or substantial change can be
catastrophic to native freshwater fishes

The Commonwealth's freshwater
fishes haven't been excused from this
worldwide problem. In the Pennsylvania
Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP), 65
fish are listed as species of greatest
conservation need. Among them are
29 state-endangered fishes. Freshwater
covers about 2.8 percent - 1,312 square
miles - of the state's slightly more than
46,000 square miles.
The need for freshwater is undeniable.
Even with impurities, it remains lifesustaining to countless vertebrate and
invertebrate species. The overwhelming
majority of Pennsylvania wildlife
depends upon freshwater to support
some portion of its life cycle. Ducks,
white-tailed deer, minks, salamanders,
mussels, and bats all come to or live in
freshwater at some point in their lives
to meet their daily needs.
The major environmental threats to
fish listed in SWAP are pollution, by
far the most significant factor, followed
by: climate change and severe weather;
energy production and mining; and
invasive and other problematic species,
genes and diseases.
Thirty-two percent of threats for
fishes were attributed to pollution
from sources including acid mine
drainage, sewage effluent, run-off from
poorly maintained agricultural fields
