SECOND BY AARON HEPLER CHANCE I had just finished staking my decoys in a short rye field when a roosted tom started gobbling. I yelped on my mouth call, so he'd know exactly where to go after flying down. At 6:15, two more gobbles sounded, muffled and close. He was on the ground and closing the distance. A short series of yelps hopefully would seal the deal. My shotgun was on my knee, pointed in the direction I anticipated the gobbler would enter the field. Then I spotted movement to my left. He was strutting on the logging road along which I'd set up, having come to me through the woods from a different field. My setup would expose my left side to him, and I knew I'd be spotted.
