retrieve my errant bolt, I replayed the shot
in my mind and what went wrong finally
struck me: when I steadied the crossbow,
I braced the right limb against the trunk.
When I pulled the trigger, the right limb
slammed into the trunk, which sent my
bolt well off course. Lesson learned.
The most unfortunate mistake I ever
made, and one that cost me the buck of a
lifetime, resulted from a blend of bungles.
It was early afternoon as I ratcheted
my climber some 20 feet up a poplar,
from which I had never before hunted.
Once settled, I let loose a medley of notes
on my grunt call. Moments later, heavy
footfalls drew my attention to a rutting
buck. He was huge with a rack to match.

He stopped broadside at 20 yards as I
came to full-draw.
Normally, this shot would be a piece
of cake, but I was aiming directly into the
late afternoon sun at a buck standing in
the shadows. I couldn't see through the
peep sight.
Unable to locate the buck through the
sight's aperture, I opted to align around
the peep and released the arrow. The crisp
sound of a bursting branch accompanied
its flight. The buck took a short leap and
moseyed off into the underbrush.
After returning to the ground, I found
my unbloodied arrow jutting out of the
leaf litter. When I looked back up to
my stand's former position, I noticed a
freshly frayed stubby branch protruding
from a dead evergreen that stood between
the buck and me. I never saw it, and it
wrecked my hurried shot at what would
have been my best buck ever. That night,
I removed the peep sight from my bowstring and never used one again.
A few years later, I discovered one
morning that sometimes success can end
in disappointment when an 8-point came
walking in from behind me, passing
beneath my stand and continuing for some
17 yards. A single note from my grunt call
turned him broadside and facilitated a perfectly placed double-lung shot from my
compound bow. He bounded out of sight,
but I heard him collapse, not 50 yards out.
A smile had barely spread across my
face when I heard footfalls in the leaves
below me. I looked down and saw a
gigantic trailing buck I hadn't noticed,
a huge-racked monster that might well
have been the great grandfather of the
first buck. All I could do was gape as Mr.
Big made a scrape 5 yards away before
slowly moving away.
I'll confess that my initial elation at
downing the smaller buck pretty much
