behind a large red oak, exposing his head
and neck as he stretched it out to look
in my direction. I squared the bead and
pulled the trigger.
He became my first spring gobbler and
I was totally enthralled with the whole
experience of that morning. A beautiful
20-pound bird with a 10¼-inch beard and
1½-inch spurs.
Since that day nearly 30 years ago, I
absolutely have been addicted to spring
gobbler hunting.
The friendships, experiences, travels,
and enjoyment the hunts have provided
are immeasurable.
I

WAS LUCKY ENOUGH to be with
my son Brandon, then about 13, the
day he bagged his first spring gobbler.
We were hunting along the top of a ridge
in Indiana County next to a large field of
Christmas trees. The morning started with
lots of gobbling but little interest in my
calling, so we slowly made our way out
the ridge, stopping every couple hundred
yards or so to set up and call.
At one location about mid-morning,
we were pleasantly surprised to hear
gobbling coming from the far side of the
Christmas-tree field.
We set up and, as the gobbling got
closer, we finally caught sight of a half
dozen jakes making their way through
the trees toward us.
I could see the excitement in my son's
eyes as we whispered back and forth, he
patiently waiting for a good shot at one of
the birds. It would come and then he was
hooked, just like me, to this day!
Brandon had hunted spring gobblers
before that day with one of my closest
friends, John, who took him on Saturdays
when I was working. John had previously called in longbeards for Brandon
on a local state game lands, but it wasn't
meant to be.
I had stressed to Brandon the need to
visually verify a beard before he considered a bird legal. He strictly applied that
rule one morning when John called in
two longbeards right front of him. But
Brandon couldn't see the beards, his
view blocked by a downed log in front
of the birds.
I remember John asking him afterward
why he hadn't shot, and Brandon simply
explained, " Dad said not to shoot until I
could see the beard. "
Well, John could see the beards and
knew they were legal, but the game warden's son couldn't and that was alright.
We were proud of his self-control and
strict commitment to the law.
