Bubbles beneath the water's surface show something is down there. It
might not stay long, and it could flee quickly, if the soft steps of a sneaking American bittern land too suddenly. A limited edition of 150 giclee

smaller specimens and more insects. Due
to the least's small size, it cannot wade in
deeper water. It compensates by traveling
above the water's surface, grasping the
stems of aquatic plants.
It can navigate through extremely narrow openings. In fact, the venerable John
James Audubon once had a captive least
bittern that could easily walk between two
books placed 1.6 inches apart.
The biggest culprit in the decline of our
bitterns clearly is loss of habitat. Historically, Pennsylvania has lost more than half
of its original wetlands, and many others
have been seriously degraded.
It is no coincidence that some of the
largest numbers and most reliable locations
for our bitterns are the extensive marshes
that are protected within the state game

lands system. State Game Lands 213 (Conneaut Marsh) and 214 (Pymatuning and
Hartstown Swamp) in Crawford County,
which were purchased many decades ago
to protect waterfowl and wetlands species,
historically have served as breeding locations for these and other marsh birds.
But American bitterns seem to have
declined even in these extensive wetlands,
making smaller parcels of habitat even
more important to their survival.
The Muck on State Game Lands 313 is
a perfect example. Although comparably
small, it has become important to bitterns,
with as many or more recent atlas records
as the large marshes.
Least bitterns also still nest in Presque
Isle State Park on the Lake Erie shoreline
and at John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge, on Philadelphia's southern doorstep.
The Game Commission and U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service have improved and
increased wetland acreage in Pennsylvania
though the Joint Partners for Wildlife program, which was initiated in 1987. Since
then, more than 7,000 acres of wetlands
habitat have been restored. Unfortunately,
bitterns didn't respond to this increase in
wetlands acreage.
It will take more and larger projects,
and diligent protection of existing wetlands, to reverse the current trends and
prevent American and least bitterns from
becoming footnotes in our ornithological
history.
