The 2020 season had been a frustrating
one, having heard only a few gobblers
over the course of the previous 3½ weeks.
But now one was sounding off on roost,
and I was closing the gap, and hoping I'd
fill my tag.
The bird was roosted in a small strip of
timber running parallel to a stream. On the
eastern side, it was bordered by a swampy
area that transitioned to farm fields. I had a
50-50 shot on which direction the gobbler
would fly off the limb, so I set up to the
north and waited.
The bird kept gobbling, but I didn't
hear any hens. I made a single cluck and
everything went silent. Apparently he'd
been hunted hard and was wary of calls.
After about 15 minutes, I caught movement to my right front and saw the bird,
fanned out, slowly and cautiously coming
my way. He needed only to come a little
farther, and took his time getting there,
but I closed the deal on a late-season
longbeard when he did.
I'd never heard the gobbler fly down or
make another noise after that single cluck
I let out. And he was just about into gun
range before I spotted him.
When I rolled him over to attach my
tag, I could see his stealthy approach
likely was the product of hard-earned
wisdom. His nearly 1½-inch needle-sharp
spurs reflected his age. He was an old bird,
a rare trophy to win on public land in these
parts of Pennsylvania.
More and more, I'm becoming a fan
of hunting the latter parts of spring turkey
season. Not only can you hunt all day, usually with less company than earlier in the
season, but the late-May birds that come
to hunters tend to be above-average. Not
that there is anything wrong with taking
those 2-years-olds with three-quarterinch spurs and 9-inch beards, but taking
an old, heavy gobbler with a long beard
and spurs is akin to taking a wise buck
with heavy headgear - it's all the finer an
accomplishment.
While taking such a bird is never easy,
a few tricks I've learned while hunting
