soon be on his way.
That's when I heard his shot.
After about 15 minutes, I heard him
call out my name. I knew he'd shot a
deer, because he wouldn't have called
out for me otherwise.
" I'm coming! " I hollered back.
When I got there, Dad smiled and
pointed to the other side of a small knoll
in a patch of hemlocks, where I saw his
9-point buck.
" Wow! " I exclaimed as I set eyes on
it, bigger with heavier, thicker antlers
than most Maple Hill bucks at the time.
" That's some buck! "
It was something special, for sure.
We field-dressed the buck and started
the drag to the logging road. It was a
heavy deer and there was no snow to
help slide it along. We used a thick
branch with Dad's drag rope tied to the
center to make the job a little easier, but
we both worked up a sweat getting it out.
We dropped the deer at the butcher
shop and got back to camp as quickly as
possible. We both wanted to get back in
the woods. While Dad was tagged out,
he wanted to try and push some deer to
me. We had 90 minutes before sundown,
so we headed back up Maple Hill.
To this day, Dad and I still talk about
how glad we were to get back in the
woods, even though we were so tired.
We only had time for one push.
Dad suggested we try a thicket that
ran parallel to a logging road atop the
mountain. I'd walk quietly along the
road for several hundred yards, then cut
into the thicket and stand. Dad gave me
30 minutes before starting.
I wasn't in place long before I could
see several whitetails bouncing toward
me. My heart pounded, but I was ready
when an 8-point buck stopped broadside
30 feet away, looking right at me.
My rifle roared and the buck dropped.
I tagged the fine animal as the sun
dropped on the horizon.
Dad arrived a short time later,
approaching with a smile. It was dark
by the time the deer was field-dressed
and we made our way back to camp.
My buck was lighter than Dad's, more
typical for Maple Hill. So, the drag
seemed much easier than with Dad's
buck, which we both regretted not
having weighed before leaving the
butcher shop.
It is unusual in whitetail hunting
when everything goes as planned. But
after a quiet opener ... it did that day.
Dad will be 88 in June and we have
not hunted together on Maple Hill since
the Route 15 Bypass was completed
in 2000. But the memories we made
there have lasted, particularly those of
1997, when we both left Maple Hill on
the season's second day with two fine
Pennsylvania bucks!
