Neighbors in Nature

OR MORE THAN 40 years, I've been privileged to live in a rural outdoorsy
place with good neighbors of the furred and feathered kind.
First, a little converted summer kitchen on a farm in Centre County, where
I could hike out the backdoor and wander along a fencerow and never fail to
encounter critters large and small. Box turtles, raccoons, fox squirrels and a host
of other animals used the fencerow as a grocery store (blackberries, crabapples,
wild grapes, hickory nuts, acorns), apartment house (hollow trees and limbs
offering cavities), and travel corridor (generally, shielded from the eyes of
humans and other predators.)
Next, I built a house on 30 acres of oak, hickory and red-maple woodland,
scattered with a mountain-laurel understory. I could glimpse deer out every
window. Once a large bear scared the dickens out of my wife when it came up
to the house, rose up and put both front paws on the window.
One spring a pair of broad-winged hawks built a nest in a tree about 60 feet
from the house. They raised a brood of fluffy-feathered young, bringing them
birds, squirrels, and a surprising number of garter snakes, while my wife, our
10-year-old son and I watched through a spotting scope.
I built a sturdy tree stand from which I harvested deer and, sitting quietly,
observed flying squirrels, ruffed grouse, wild turkeys, great-crested flycatchers,
and, one December morning, two bobcats sneaking past, the white fur inside
their pricked ears strikingly bright in the dim light.
Now I live on a 120-acre farm in northern Vermont. Think winters with 120
inches of snow, and daily snowshoe outings to keep in touch with our natural
neighbors. Such as the whitetail doe we saw this winter, bounding in big leaps
through the snow, a coyote plowing along behind. The canine predator heard us
and came to a sudden halt, then ran directly away.
Last March it was a sleek northern shrike perched in a sugar
maple, watching for mice and voles. The next morning a red
fox crossed the hayfield in front of my office window, carrying
something in its mouth. I grabbed my binoculars and watched it
approach a groundhog hole on a hillock behind the barn. From
the hole emerged a second fox, who accepted what looked
like a rodent from its mate. Then the first fox headed
uphill through the field, while the other ducked back
into the den.
The litter of fox pups are new neighbors that we
happily embrace.
