Lost!

Y THE TITLE, readers might think this story has to do with a hunter or myself being
lost, and once or twice in my 50-plus years of hunting I've been " turned-around " in
the woods, but never lost. It's about something different, though.
Let me tell you about it.
I'm not exactly sure of the year. My wife Debbie and I were married for about 10 years
at the time, and my Chevy Sport pickup was fairly new and it was a 1990 model.
It was a mid-October morning and being I didn't archery hunt at the time, I was after
squirrels. I had permission to hunt a farm at the other end of my native York County - about
20 miles from home - that had an oak and hickory stand adjacent to large fields planted in
corn and soybeans. The woodlot was a magnet for squirrels, and I had taken several limits
over the years I'd hunted that parcel.
The landowner had told me to park adjacent to the soybean field, and walk in through
the field as long as I stepped carefully so as not to flatten any of the beans.
The dew was heavy on the grass and beans that frosty morning, as I donned my hunting
coat and orange cap, and pulled the Winchester Model 42 .410 from its case. I locked the
truck (you had to actually use a key in the door to lock and unlock back then), and slid the
keys into a front pocket of my worn camo pants.
It was a perfect morning for squirrel hunting - azure-blue sky, cool and no wind.
I carefully picked my way through the soybean field, traveling a good 200 yards through
it to reach the woodlot where I wanted to start hunting.
Squirrels were everywhere that morning, and it took only about two hours to bag a limit.
After field-dressing the last bushytail, I contemplated what I could do the rest of the
day. Debbie would have chores for me to do around the house, but it was too nice of a day
not to spend it hunting.
I decided to stop home, switch shotguns, and head north beyond Harrisburg to hit some
grouse hotspots.
I trudged back to the truck through the soybean field, and reached in my pants pocket
for my keys but was horrified to discover a hole in the pocket and they were gone!
What to do?
That was back before everyone carried cellphones. I had no idea when or where they
had slipped through the hole in my pants.
With panic setting in, I gazed over the soybean field. As luck would have it, my path
through the beans could easily be detected because the frost had not yet completely burned
off. I was able to follow my exact route in and out of the field where I had brushed the
frost off the soybeans.
I got about 30 yards from the truck, following the path through the field, searching the
ground when I spotted something shiny. It was my lost keys!
Sometimes things just work out.
