I FIRST SAW THE BUCK on my way home from work in August 2020. He was feeding in a clover field across from my housing development in Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County. Even at 700 yards his rack was impressive. I spent weeks watching through binoculars, studying where and when he entered the field. He saw me one evening - from 600 yards away - and with a flick of his tail, he disappeared back into the woods. It was hard to count points so far away, but I knew he had at least 10. The buck entered the field through a natural funnel every night, 10 to 15 minutes before dark, generally accompanied by a big 8-pointer. They typically were preceded by at least a dozen does and six to eight smaller bucks. One evening in early September, I counted 23 deer in the field. That's a lot of eyes and noses to evade.
