" Well, the original owner would be
amazed, maybe a bit envious, " Ben
replied. " Good luck and I hope the rain
holds off. I wouldn't want to get that gun
wet. "
" That's what it's for, " Tom emphasized.
" It needs to be out in the briars.
And, so do I. "

T WAS DIM and quiet in the hollow
when Tom arrived at the old house, the
sky a foreboding gridlock of steely clouds.
He slipped two 7½s into the chambers
of the Fox and was about to whistle up
Shadow, but caught himself.
He walked out to the end of the grassy
opening where the overgrown yard
blended into the woods, then followed

a tiny run winding through a crabtree
thicket. The sound of water trickling into
a pool reminded him of Shadow's bell.
When he moved forward, a woodcock
flushed, towering up through an opening
in the dense canopy and, at his shot,
helicoptered down like a maple samara.
Tom hurried over to retrieve the woodcock,
quickly recognizing that hunting
birds without a dog was an entirely different
process. The complex world of
scent now meant nothing. One had to look
carefully to see a sitting or moving bird.
Marking a downed bird had to be more
precise. The artistry was diminished, but
most of all, he missed the companionship
of his dog.
It took Tom almost three hours to hunt
the hillside. After missing a grouse, he
remembered to step over logs with his
left foot and always to have his gun at the
ready. Farther on, he spied a windfall that
looked " birdy. " A pale, sun-bleached limb
on the other side resembled Shadow's
