A Wild Encounter
ORGET ALL that business about how hunting is about slowing down, seeking
quiet and connecting with nature. This experience was memorable for raw lust.
It was late October and time for playing catch-up. I was on public land in Greene

County, near the West Virginia border, close to where our little group hunted before
a divorce in the family years earlier scattered us to other woods far away.
A friend and I planned to scout here starting months ago. Then, life happened:
work commitments, an ailing parent, Saturday " voluntary " football practices for
our kids.
So now, bow in hand, the hope was not so much to kill a deer or even see one as
to figure out where to be in rifle season.
But there's no accounting for hormones.
Stopped against an oak tree, catching my breath from a steep uphill climb, I spotted
two deer. A buck frantically chased a doe, to no avail. She emphatically ditched him.
As he stood there boiling, I tentatively blew into a grunt tube. He reacted immediately
so, emboldened, I grunted again, louder and with more attitude.
That did it. The buck came at me in a rush, full of bad intentions. I scrambled to
nock an arrow, hoping to count antler points as he closed in.
The landscape didn't permit that. There are no " mountains " in Greene County;
its highest point stands only about 1,600 feet tall. But the countryside is like the bellows
of an accordion, an unrelenting series of peaks and valleys, all deep and narrow.
" Severe, " that's how one Game Commission map describes the terrain.
Watching the deer approach was like watching a swimmer in cresting waves.
The buck momentarily popped into view each time he crossed a knife-edged ridge,
then disappeared into a gully, then reappeared and disappeared, again and again.
Having pinpointed my exact location, he charged up out of one final fold and
skidded to a stop 10 feet in front of me.
I stared at him, bow at full draw, counting points, once, twice. Just three to a side,
even counting brow tines. Too few for this area. Darn.
He stared back, equally intense and just as disappointed. Eyes wide, ears erect,
muscles taut, he was fierce, wild, a magnificent coil ready to spring.
So, he sprung.
He pirouetted left, his bright white tail throwing bouncing insults. Stopping out of
sight in thick young pines - fooled just minutes after being rebuffed - he stomped,
snorted, huffed, puffed and otherwise threw a teenaged life-isn't-fair tantrum.
Then, ghost-like, he was gone. The woods fell silent.
I sat down under that big oak and started breathing again.
