the same in return, Roger said. Those
pictures, and the deer harvested over the
past decade, have made people aware of
the possibilities.
" Once a lot of people in our area
discovered what we were doing and the
results we were getting, they got really
excited about it and started doing the
same things, " Roger said. " So there have
been other bucks in the township that have
made the book, too.
" If you show someone a picture of
what's roaming around out there, it may
make the difference in whether they hold
off on shooting something that needs
another year or two. "
Roger shares his family's successes -
and more so promotes big-game hunting
in Bradford County overall - in another
way, too. He's founder of the Bradford
County Trophy Deer and Bear Club
(www.bcdeerandbear.com). The nonprofit
group is " dedicated to measuring, keeping
records of, and bringing to public attention
the outstanding deer and bears taken in
Bradford County each year. "
The club holds an annual big game
awards banquet on the fourth Saturday
in September, which is National Hunting
and Fishing Day. Hunters can display
their most notable bucks and bears in 16
categories.
The club has certainly focused a spotlight
on Bradford County. There's been a
surge in Big Game Records book entries
from there in recent years.
Roger is proud of that, but not convinced
it need be unique.
" I think there are other counties in
the state that are harvesting just as many
or more record-book bucks as we do, "
Roger said. " It's just that they don't have
the organization like ours that gives those
hunters the incentive to get them scored
and entered into the record books. "
Few places, though, are likely producing
massive bucks as consistently as the
Kingsley farm. That's no accident. The
family puts a lot of time and effort into
maintaining it as a big buck hotbed.
The record book shows that work is
paying off.
" I think one of the key elements to
why we are so successful at killing some
trophy-class animals is that we have lots
of ground here, just tremendous food
sources, and tremendous cover, " Roger
said. " Plus, we're all a little selective in
what we shoot.
" That all helps get those bucks into
those older age classes. "
