ANUARY, February and March are busy months for big-game
scorers. The racks and skulls of those trophy deer and bears
taken in November, December and January begin reaching the end
of their required 60-day drying periods, and hunters eager to know
their trophies' official measurements begin making plans to have
them scored.
At the same time, hunters who took trophies in previous seasons
might at last be seeking out scorers, too. It's never too late to have a
trophy added to the official records, and it's not unusual for hunters
to have older trophies scored alongside newer ones.
In any case, Pennsylvania's scorers will be putting tape to antlers
and skulls more frequently in the coming months. And before hunters
have a trophy scored, there are a few things they should know.
I TOOK A TROPHY, NOW WHAT?
Deer and elk cannot have official measurements taken until the
antlers have air-dried at habitable room temperature for at least 60
days after the animal was harvested.
Placing a board between the main beams of deer or elk racks to
inhibit shrinkage of the inside spread is not permitted.
I recommend getting trophies scored as soon as possible after the
drying time has been met because a little shrinkage still will occur
beyond 60 days. More than once, I've scored deer racks a year or
more after they were harvested that were held out of the record book
by a mere eighth-inch.
Those trophies would have made the book if scored sooner.
Because official scorers can get extremely busy, especially in
winter, trophy owners should have at least some indication their
deer, bear or elk has a good chance of measuring into the records.
Usually, a whitetail rack needs at least eight points to make the
minimum score.

culators and scoring instructions are available on the Boone
and Crockett (www.boone-crockett.org) and Pope and Young
(www.pope-young.org) clubs' websites.
For bear skulls, the scores of which are a sum total of their length
and width, it's easy to get a fairly accurate estimate, and an idea of
whether the skull might enter the records.
Taxidermists usually can provide a good estimate of what a
trophy will score, as well.
Trophies cannot be scored if they have been tampered with in
any way, including the deliberate removal of abnormal points from
typical racks, or the addition of artificial or genuine antler material
to increase a trophy's score.
For the state records, antlers in velvet cannot be scored. The velvet
