his sons at the truck. He was rounding a
corner in the trail when he heard what
sounded like a hunter making a turkey
call.
" So I went to reach down into my
pocket for my orange hat and he must
have seen movement because he shot me
in the right side of my face. I went down, "
Mike said.
The shooter rushed over - something
Mike appreciates still - but, in a panic,
called his mother. It fell to her to call 911.
The shooter then used Mike's walkietalkie
to call Josh and Andrew. They in
turn called their mother, Terry, who was
hosting a yard sale with Amber. Minutes
earlier they'd heard the local fire station's
siren blare, not knowing it was for Mike.
She still gets emotional thinking about
it.
" If I stop..., " Terry haltingly said, fighting
tears. " It still bothers me. "
Knowing where Mike and the boys
were hunting, she and Amber jumped
into her car. That prompted a sequence
she calls sad and funny.
" I was just so beside myself that I
backed out and hit another car that was
there, " Terry said. " So a lady from the
yard sale decided she was going to take us
because she said 'you can't drive.'
" She got in my car and took us there
but then, that poor lady, she could not
remember where we lived. So when she
left us she was driving around asking,
'Do you know who this car belongs to?' "
By then, Josh and Andrew were joined
at the shooting scene by Union County
Game Warden Dirk Remensnyder and
one of the Hobbins' neighbors, a registered
nurse.
" I talked to Mike, telling him what we
were going to do, what was happening,
how he was doing, " Remensnyder said.
Mike remembers that, and the neighbor's
care.
" I knew I was in trouble, " he said. " I
could hardly stay awake. But she had a
warm, wet towel, and she was wiping
off my face and it felt so good. I'll never
forget that. It was like, boy, this is so
good. "
They took him down the mountain in
a truck to a waiting medical helicopter,
