The buck made it through the hunting seasons unscathed,

they analyzed how the doe reacted.
Researchers found that in 20 of 25
trials females spent more time next
to the pen with larger-antlered males.
Statistically, there is less than 2 percent
chance that would happen if females
randomly selected either buck.
Antlers grow like trees, meaning
from the tip rather than the base, and
are covered in a hairy filament called
velvet. It's living tissue filled with veins
and arteries.
Hormones and day length prompt
antlers to grow. Other factors determine
how they ultimately turn out. Fleegle
compared antlers to snowflakes in that
each set - even on the same deer from
one year to the next - can look different
based on genetics, nutrition, overall
health and more.
Then there are injuries, which are
fairly common.
Velvet-covered antlers are delicate;
one hard knock at the wrong time can
change their shape.
" When a growing antler is broken,
it bleeds profusely, even inside the
velvet, " Fleegle said. " Blood can fill the
inside of the velvet. The hardening or
mineralization process still occurs, creating
a heavy, swollen, club-like antler.
If the injury is to the pedicle, then the

deformity could persist for several sets
of antlers or for the rest of the buck's
life if it does not heal. "
Antlers can also suffer what are
called " contralateral effects. " That's
where an injury to one side of the
body causes an antler deformity on the
opposite side.
Then, too, bucks with more than two
antlers occasionally turn up. Fleegle
said they likely suffered an injury that
redistributed pedicle cells. Though such
an injury is unfortunate for the individual
animal, it shows how amazing
antlers really are.
" Transplanting pedicle cells to
another part of the body can result in
antler growth from that area, " Fleegle
said. " Researchers have transplanted
cells to mice and they have grown
antler-like projections. Cells have even
been transplanted to the lower leg of
a deer and an antler has grown from
the leg. "
Antlers stop growing between midJuly
and mid-August. It takes time for
them to fully harden, though, so they
retain their velvet until about midSeptember.
Bucks,
as a group, shed their antlers
over a four-month window. But just
when they fall varies.
